this morning, nightclub inferno. >> now details from the scene of such sorrow in brazil. after a nightclub blaze that killed hundreds. developing right now, a sweeping plan to rewrite the nation's immigration laws. including a pathway to citizenship for the undocumented. air scare. a jet's engine erupting in flames. what would you do. and hollywood's second-favorite awards show. some surprises last night at the s.a.g. awards. good monday morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. >> and i'm sunny hostin. they started burying the dead after that terrible nightclub

fire in brazil. >> most of the victims died of suffocation after toxic smoke filmed the air of that crowded club. when firefighters rushed to the scene, they found the entrance blocked by a pile of bodies. more than 230 victims died. more than 100 were injured. >> we spoke earlier to the bbc's julia carnero, who just arrived in santa maria. >> the sports center, where families and grends have gathered to identify the bodies was decemberlating. trucks carried the bodies to the site. it was the only place in the city that had the capacity to actually be a solution for the tragedy that happened because there wasn't a morgue that could take in such a number. >> are you hearing more about the setup inside the club that there wasn't easier access for people to get out?

>> yes, exactly. lots of witnesses were saying it was a desperate situation for them, not to get out. not being able to see far because of the smoke. and on top of that, some witnesses have said that actually security guards stood in their way in the beginning because there was lots of confusion. they didn't understand quite what was happening. >> can you tell us a bit about this nightclub, in terms of the popularity? >> this is one of the most popular nightclubs here. people here have told me, it's called kiss. lots of young people go there. and lots of students. i was told that alone from this public university, about 50 students were killed. >> and news of the nightclub fire hit hard back here at home. a similar tragedy took 100 lives at a nightclub in rhode island in 2003. pyrotechnics by the band, great

white, got trapped in the ceiling. fire codes have been made more strict in that state as well as others. we'll have the latest coming up from brazil today on "good morning america." now, to immigration reform. it's getting a lot of attention this week from washington's power players. new proposals are being unveiled today. and they contain some controversial ideas. abc's preti arla has more. >> reporter: while they came to an agreement, there is still much more work to do. but still, some say it's a big step in the right direction. it's a hot-button issue coming to the forefront again, immigration reform. a bipartisan group of senators, four democrats and four republicans, have now unveiled a plan to tackle it. >> we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in an illegal status. >> reporter: the plan by the

so-called gang of eight senators, lays out we ways to saturday some of the big issues. it has a path to citizenship for undocumented workers and strengthening border security. >> we've virtually been going for about 25 years without a clear statement about immigration policy. that's unacceptable in this nation of immigrants. >> reporter: tomorrow, president obama will lay out his own plan. he promised in the 2008 campaign but failed to deliver it in his first ten. with seven of ten latino voters supporting president obama in the 2012 election, republicans now appear more willing to play ball. >> there's a new appreciation on both sides of the aisle, including, maybe more importantly on the republican side of the aisle. >> americans support it, in poll after poll. latino voters expect it. thirdly, democrats want it. and fourth, republicans need it. >> reporter: and washington prepares to act. some states are taking actions

on their own. illinois became the fourth state to allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses. sunny, back to you. >> preeti arla in washington. thank you so much. getting a lot of attention this morning, the president and hillary clinton sitting down together. we'll have the highlights from that interview coming up in about 15 minutes. now, we turn to the nuclear tension stemming from the korean peninsula. this morning in seoul, a spokesman said south korea will do whatever it takes to stop north korea from conducts a new nuclear test. china is urging restraint. and is promising to cut food ate to north korea if it goes ahead with another test. the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, khalid sheikh mohammed will be among five making courtroom appearances at guantanamo bay. it begins four days of hearings, where two dozen motions will be

argued. all of the defendants are facing the death penalty. we're seeing frightening pictures from what could have been a disaster in turkey. a streak of light across the sky was a jet airliner's burning engine. 114 people were onboard the turkish airline flight. the engine caught fire just as the plane was flying through severe turbulence. the jet landed safefully with no one hurt. an ice storm that hit the nation's midsection is now moving east. that means it could be a rough commute for major cities from boston down to charlotte. here's accuweather's jim dickey. >> pattern change under way. we're watching warmth stream its way into the eastern half of the country here already. quite warm today across the plains. portions of the midwest. but as that warmth noses in, cold at the surface across much of the northeast. we will see freezing rain in philadelphia, baltimore, d.c. be careful on the roads as you

merchants have always paid fees when customers use credit cards. but now, a court ruling says they can pass on as much as 4%. it's unlikely, though, that many will. it would, of course, annoy many customers. and ten states have laws prohibiting the surcharges. there are no fees, though, for debit card use. toyota is back on top. the japanese automaker is once again the world's biggest automaker. it sold nearly 10 million vehicles last year, beating general motors and volkswagen. all three at to makers posted gains from a year ago. toyota lost the top spot after the tsunami in japan and recalls in the u.s. it will cost an extra penny to mail a letter or a postcard. it's 46 cents for a letter, 33 cents for a postcard. but the price for mailing a letter to canada or mexico is up 25 cents. priority mail is up but includes free tracking.

>> just make it 2 bucks apiece. hansel and gretel witch hunters stuffed the movie competition into the oven. the r-rated update was tops at the box office. its take was less than bewatching. "hansel and gretel" took in $19 million its opening weekend. "mamma" which you saw and liked was second with $13 million. and "silver linings playbook" a darling at this year's oscars, at $10 million. today is bubble wrap appreciation day. rob discovered a new use for the packing material. bubble wrap was invenlted more than 50 years ago. today, the company makes muff each year to stretch to the moon and back, doing more than $8 billion in business. who doesn't appreciate bubble wrap, rob? >> we have a less serious show that comes on before this one. those of you who have never seen "world news now," that's a

check this out. some dramatic video from eastern australia this morning. a family was stranded in the back of their truck by heavy flooding. they put their child in a bag so he could be pulled up to a helicopter. safely onboard, another crew membered unzipped the bag. and there was the precious cargo, all safe. >> incredible.

now, for a look at your morning road conditions. new york starts off with freezing rain and then switches to just rain, old rain by the afternoon. freezing drizzle on the roads around rain in the seattle area. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in new york, philadelphia, washington, d.c., detroit, chicago, minneapolis and salt lake city. >> everywhere. and back to the news this morning. hillary clinton wraps up her term as secretary of state this friday. last night, she sat down with her boss and former rival, president obama for a much-anticipated interview. >> the two powerful politicians described their unique partnership and stoked speculation about clinton's future. here's abc's larry jacobs. >> reporter: it was an extraordinary event. an adoring president publicly praises his former political nemesis on "60 minutes." >> i consider hillary a strong

friend. >> reporter: the side-by-sided a nation fest sent speculation into hyperdrive. was this an endorsement for a hillary clinton run in 2016? >> i have to tell you. you guys in the press are encore jabl. i was inaugurated four days ago. and you're talking about elections four years from now. >> and i'm out of politics. i'm forbidden from hearing these questions. i don't think he or i can make predictions about what's going to happen tomorrow or the next year. >> reporter: secretary of state and the president refused to speculate on the next presidential campaign. they became closer over the last fur years. >> part of our bond is, we've been through the same stuff. and part of being through the same stuff is getting whacked around in political campaigns. being criticized in the press. >> reporter: larry jacobs, abc

news, new york. another interview with the president surfaced over the weekend in "the new republic" magazine. answering questions about guns, he admitted to often going skeet shooting at camp david, something unknown to most white house reporters. crews on new york's hudson river will attempt to brang a small plane to the surface today. rescuers with boats with or the river last night after the plane crashed into the icy water. a man and a woman onboard were pulled out of the water half an hour after going in. they are listed in fair condition. the crash is under investigation. and the mississippi river near vixburg, mississippi, is closed this morning following a barge accident. the barge, which was carrying 80,000 gallons of oil hit a railroad bridge. it was seen three miles downstream. we have details about the murder case of jonbenet ramsey. the murder at her parents' house

on christmas in 1996 remains unsolved. but now, reports say a grand jury had voted to indict jonbenet's parents, john and patsy ramsey. but the district attorney refused to sign that indictment, believing he could not prove the case beyond reasonable doubt. u.s. marshals say he's a dangerous career criminal who keeps escaping from jail. he was in the wayne county jail in detroit for six days before he walked out last week. before that escape, he left a jail in phoenix the very same way. and turning to sports this morning, the pro bowl game was played under the sunny skies of hawaii yesterday. but was it for the last time? >> let's hope so. it wasn't even close. the nfc trounced the afc. but both teams did seem to be trying out there. the game is a sort of side show to the super bowl.

and commissioner roger goodell has questioned whether it should return. and the 49ers arrived in new orleans last night, accompanied by their families. they'll have a week to practice there and get ready for sunday's big game. it's san francisco's first super bowl appearance in 18 years. and coach jim harbaugh says the team is super happy to be there. >> the ravens travel to the big easy today after final practices at their training complex in maryland. sunday was a day of rest. coach john harbaugh said his team is sharp and excited. but he admitted that the niners are a well-coached football team. of course, that's a nod to his little brother, jim. going to be a good game between carnival season and super bowl, my favorite city, new orleans is rockin' and rolling for the next two weeks. coming up next this morning in "the pulse," alcohol and live tv. wait until you hear what sofia vergara said on last night's s.a.g. awards. and johnny heisman does the
